Speaker to take decisions on defections in TMC, Shiv Sena (UBT) before monsoon session

Business To Business, New Delhi, 24th June, 2026: Om Birla is expected to take decisions on the defection cases involving rebel MPs from the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) before the commencement of Parliament's monsoon session, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The monsoon session of Parliament generally begins in the third week of July.
Hearings Held With Both Sides
Sources said that the Speaker has already met and heard:

A TMC delegation led by Abhishek Banerjee.
Representatives of the breakaway TMC faction.
Delegations connected to the Shiv Sena (UBT) dispute.
Members of the rebel group in the Maharashtra case.

The interactions were part of the process of examining competing claims and petitions arising from the defections.
Legal Consultations Underway
According to sources, consultations are continuing with:

Parliamentary legal experts.

Officials dealing with anti-defection matters.

Disqualification Demands
Both the TMC and Shiv Sena (UBT) have sought action against rebel MPs, arguing that their conduct attracts provisions of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, commonly known as the anti-defection law.
