Spectre of political violence returns ahead of Bengal oath as Rath probe points to planned hit

Business To Business, Kolkata, 7th May, 2026: West Bengal witnessed heightened political tension on Thursday following the murder of Chandranath Rath, even as early findings in the investigation suggested the killing may have been a planned targeted attack.
Rath, the personal assistant to Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead on Wednesday night in what investigators suspect was a coordinated operation involving professional shooters. Police have reportedly recovered vehicles fitted with fake number plates, indicating possible premeditation.
The incident has intensified political tensions in the state, triggering a renewed exchange of allegations between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the All India Trinamool Congress.
Rath’s mother alleged that the killing was politically motivated and linked it to the defeat of Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur, a claim made in the backdrop of escalating post-poll tensions.
