Suvendu links Census 2027 in Bengal to demographic shifts caused by 'infiltration from Bangladesh'

Business To Business, Kolkata, 29th May, 2026:    Suvendu Adhikari on Friday highlighted the importance of the upcoming Census 2027 exercise, referring to what he described as “sharp demographic changes” in West Bengal due to alleged infiltration from Bangladesh.
Speaking after inaugurating a conference of the state’s Principal Census Officers, Adhikari said the self-enumeration phase beginning on August 1 would play a key role in documenting evolving demographic trends.
According to the chief minister, the self-enumeration process will be conducted in two phases:

  • August 1 to August 14 for self-enumeration by residents,
  • followed by house-listing operations by census officials from August 16 to September 14.
The Census exercise is expected to collect demographic, housing, and socio-economic data across the country and will be one of the largest administrative surveys undertaken in India.
