T'gana assembly to pass resolution to lower minimum age to contest LS, assembly polls to 21: CM

Business To Business, Hyderabad, 26^th July, 2026:   Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Saturday announced that the state government will soon convene a special session of the Legislative Assembly to pass a resolution urging the Centre to reduce the minimum age for contesting Lok Sabha and Assembly elections from 25 years to 21 years.
Addressing a candlelight rally organised over the NEET paper leak issue, Reddy said the proposed resolution aims to provide greater political participation opportunities for young people.
The Chief Minister also claimed that the agitation led by Generation Z over the alleged NEET paper leak had compelled the Centre to act, referring to the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
In his speech, Reddy alleged that the youth-led protests had defeated the "56-inch chest"—a reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi—and forced Pradhan to step down.
The minimum age for contesting elections to the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies is currently 25 years under existing law. The proposed resolution seeks to urge the Union government to amend the relevant legal provisions to lower the eligibility age to 21 years.
