Business To Business, Kolkata, 05th July, 2026: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday night alleged that heavy police deployment and barricades were placed outside the residence of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to prevent her from visiting the family of an 11-year-old girl who was allegedly raped and murdered in South 24 Parganas district.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), however, rejected the allegation, describing it as an attempt by the TMC to "manufacture a controversy" over what it termed a routine security arrangement.
Senior TMC leaders claimed that more than 10 police vehicles, along with barricades, were stationed in the narrow lane outside Banerjee's residence in the Kalighat area of Kolkata. They also alleged that security personnel were deployed near the residence of the party's national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee.
According to the TMC, the deployment was intended to prevent Mamata Banerjee from travelling to Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district to meet the family of the 11-year-old girl, whose body was recovered earlier on Sunday after she had gone missing. The case has sparked widespread outrage and protests in the area.
Responding to the allegations, the BJP maintained that the security arrangements were routine and not aimed at restricting the movement of any political leader. The party accused the TMC of attempting to create unnecessary controversy over standard policing measures.
The allegations came amid heightened political tensions following the girl's death, which has triggered protests and intensified exchanges between the state's ruling BJP government and the opposition TMC. Authorities have not issued an official statement on the specific reasons for the police deployment outside Mamata Banerjee's residence.
