TMC govt used 1993 firing for political gains: WB CM after making inquiry panel report public

Business To Business, Kolkata, 21st July, 2026:   West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday tabled in the Assembly the report of the Justice (Retd.) Sushanta Chatterjee Commission, which inquired into the 1993 police firing on a Youth Congress rally that left 13 supporters dead. He accused the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of exploiting the incident for political purposes while failing to act on the panel's recommendations.
The report was tabled a day ahead of the TMC's annual July 21 rally, which commemorates those killed in the firing over three decades ago. Adhikari alleged that although the previous government had received the commission's report in 2024, it did not implement several of its key recommendations.
"The commission recommended compensation of Rs 25 lakh for the family of each person killed and Rs 5 lakh for every injured person. However, the previous TMC government neither implemented these recommendations nor paid the compensation," the chief minister said.
