Business To Business, New Deli, 30th May, 2026: Derek O'Brien on Saturday raised questions about the security situation in West Bengal following the attack on Abhishek Banerjee during a visit to families affected by post-poll violence in Sonarpur.
In a post on X, O'Brien said that Banerjee, whom he described as the Lok Sabha leader of the country's second-largest opposition party, came under attack while visiting the family of a person allegedly killed in post-poll violence.
He alleged that Banerjee was attacked by supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party and questioned the adequacy of security arrangements. O'Brien also asked why security had allegedly been withdrawn on the day election results were announced and called upon Union Home Minister Amit Shah to respond.
According to police, unidentified individuals hurled stones, shoes and eggs at Banerjee and allegedly attempted to physically assault him while shouting slogans. The incident has triggered sharp political reactions, with the All India Trinamool Congress accusing the BJP of orchestrating the attack, while broader questions have been raised over security and law-and-order arrangements in the aftermath of the state elections.
