TN CM Vijay-led meeting of MPs resolves to oppose in toto Centre's proposed delimitation exercise
Business To Business, Chennai, 08 August, 2026: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Saturday chaired a meeting of MPs from alliance and friendly parties that decided to strongly oppose the Union government's proposed delimitation exercise.
The meeting, however, was boycotted by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
Key decisions
According to a state government release:
- The participating MPs unanimously decided to oppose the proposed delimitation exercise.
- They demanded that the Lok Sabha–Rajya Sabha seat ratio remain at 2.2:1.
- A resolution will be introduced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly to permanently safeguard the interests of Tamil Nadu and other southern states in the delimitation process.
Opposition reaction
The
DMK described the meeting as a
"farce", while the
AIADMK called it a
"hurriedly staged drama".
The disagreement reflects the broader political sensitivity around delimitation in southern India, where parties have expressed concern that a redistribution of Lok Sabha seats based on more recent population figures could alter the region's representation relative to states with faster population growth.
