TN seeks duty-free cotton imports to support textile sector: CM Vijay writes to PM

Business To Business, Chennai, 14th May 2026:  C Joseph Vijay on Thursday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove the import duty on cotton, highlighting concerns of the textile industry in Tamil Nadu.
In his first letter to the prime minister after assuming office as chief minister, Vijay said Tamil Nadu is the country’s largest textile and apparel exporting state and that the sector plays a crucial role in the state’s economy.
He noted that lakhs of people depend on the textile and apparel industry for direct and indirect employment, particularly women from rural and semi-urban areas.
According to Vijay, reducing or removing import duty on cotton would help the industry address rising raw material costs, improve competitiveness and protect employment in one of the state’s key manufacturing sectors.
