Want to bring back Tatas to Singur, send signal Bengal is investor-friendly: Samik Bhattacharya

Business To Business, Kolkata, 30th May, 2026:  Samik Bhattacharya has said that the government of West Bengal wants the Tata Group to return to Singur, describing such a move as both an economic necessity and a strong signal that the state is once again open to investment.
In an interview discussing the BJP government's industrial vision following its electoral victory in the state, Bhattacharya said that bringing the Tata Group back to Singur would help reverse what he described as the negative message sent to investors after the withdrawal of the Tata Nano project nearly two decades ago.
"We want the Tatas to come back, and that too in Singur. We want to send a message to the entire country and the world that West Bengal is investor-friendly and is ready to welcome investments," he said.
Background: The Singur controversy
Singur became one of the most significant industrial and political flashpoints in modern West Bengal politics after Tata Motors proposed establishing its Nano car manufacturing plant there in 2006. The project faced intense protests over land acquisition issues and was eventually relocated to Sanand in 2008.
The episode had far-reaching political consequences and became a major issue in state politics, with supporters arguing that the project's departure hurt industrialisation prospects, while opponents maintained that farmers' land rights needed protection.
Industrial message
Bhattacharya's remarks indicate an effort to reposition Singur as a symbol of industrial revival. According to him, attracting a major investor such as the Tata Group back to the township would demonstrate that West Bengal is prepared to welcome large-scale investment and manufacturing projects.
The proposal also reflects the broader emphasis on industrial growth, job creation, and investor confidence as part of the state's economic agenda. Whether the Tata Group has any plans to return to Singur has not been publicly announced.
