West Bengal cabinet undergoes expansion, 35 MLAs take oath as ministers

Business To Business, Kolkata, 1st June, 2026:   West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday significantly expanded his ministry, with 35 BJP legislators taking the oath of office, increasing the total strength of the council of ministers to 41.
Key ministers inducted
Among the prominent BJP leaders sworn in were:

  • Swapan Dasgupta
  • Tapas Roy
  • Shankar Ghosh
The oath ceremony was conducted by R. N. Ravi at Lok Bhavan, in the presence of the chief minister, existing cabinet members, and senior state officials.
Composition of the expanded cabinet
The cabinet expansion appears to have been designed with multiple considerations in mind, including:
  • Regional representation from different parts of West Bengal.
  • Inclusion of various ethnic and social communities.
  • Gender balance.
  • Administrative and political requirements of the new government.
Such a broad-based composition is often intended to ensure that different sections of society and regions of the state have representation in the government's decision-making structure.
Significance for the BJP government
The expansion is a major step for the BJP's first government in West Bengal, allowing the administration to:
  • Allocate portfolios across a larger team.
  • Strengthen governance capacity.
  • Improve regional outreach.
  • Bring both experienced leaders and newer faces into executive roles.
With the ministry now approaching its full strength, the Adhikari government is expected to focus on implementing its policy agenda, administrative reforms, and development initiatives across the state.
The swearing-in ceremony marks one of the most important organizational milestones for the new government since it assumed office, laying the foundation for the next phase of governance in West Bengal.
