West Bengal to observe state day on June 20 from this year

Business To Business, Kolkata, 3rd June, 2026:   The West Bengal government has decided to officially observe June 20 as West Bengal Day beginning this year, according to state minister Dilip Ghosh.
Announcing the decision after a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Ghosh said the date holds historical significance because, under the leadership of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the then Bengal Legislative Assembly voted on June 20, 1947, on a resolution that ultimately led to the partition of Bengal and the creation of the state of West Bengal.
According to the minister:

  • June 20 had been commemorated by supporters as "Bengal Day."
  • The state government has now decided to give the date official recognition.
  • The observance will begin from this year onward as West Bengal Day.
The decision is likely to carry both historical and political significance, as interpretations of Bengal's partition and the role of various leaders during the period have often been subjects of debate. Supporters of the move view June 20 as marking the political process that ensured the formation of West Bengal within India, while critics have historically favored other dates associated with the state's identity and history.
Further details regarding official celebrations and commemorative events are expected to be announced by the state government ahead of June 20.
