Youth Congress launches campaign for national law to protect gig workers

Business To Business, New Deli, 30th May, 2026:  The Indian Youth Congress on Saturday launched a nationwide campaign demanding a national law for gig workers, arguing that millions of people employed through app-based platforms continue to face low wages, job insecurity, and inadequate social protection.
The demand was raised during the Gig Workers' Nyay Campaign conclave held at the headquarters of the All India Congress Committee in New Delhi. Workers associated with various online delivery and service platforms participated in the event.
Addressing the gathering, Uday Bhanu Chib said the organisation would urge the Central government to introduce a comprehensive national legal framework for gig workers.
The campaign's key demands include:

  • Legal recognition and protection for gig and platform workers.
  • Social security benefits such as insurance, pensions, and healthcare coverage.
  • Fair wages and transparent payment mechanisms.
  • Better safeguards against arbitrary termination or deactivation from digital platforms.
  • Improved working conditions and labour rights.
The issue of gig-worker welfare has gained prominence in recent years as app-based employment has expanded rapidly across sectors such as food delivery, e-commerce logistics, ride-hailing, and home services. Several states have begun exploring measures to protect such workers, while labour groups continue to advocate for a nationwide framework covering social security and employment rights.
