ZPM's K Laltluangkima elected to Rajya Sabha, becomes party's first MP in Upper House
Business To Business, Aizawl, 18th June, 2026: The ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) achieved a significant political milestone on Thursday by securing its first-ever representation in the Rajya Sabha.
K Laltluangkima won the election to Mizoram's lone seat in the Rajya Sabha.
According to Assembly Secretary and Returning Officer Zothansanga Ralte:
- K Laltluangkima (ZPM) secured 26 votes.
- Zothansangi Hmar of the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) received 10 votes.
Three legislators abstained from voting:
- K Beichhua
- K Hrahmo
- C Ngunlianchunga
The victory is notable because it gives the ZPM its first presence in the Rajya Sabha since the party's formation. The party came to power in Mizoram after winning the state assembly elections and has since emerged as the dominant political force in the state.
With this win, the ZPM strengthens its voice at the national level by gaining representation in Parliament's Upper House, where members participate in legislative debates, scrutiny of bills, and discussions on national policy.
The election is expected to:
- Enhance the ZPM's influence in national politics.
- Provide Mizoram's ruling party with a direct platform in Parliament.
- Strengthen coordination between the state government and the Centre on issues concerning Mizoram and the wider Northeast region.
For the ZPM, the result marks another step in its political consolidation following its rise to power in Mizoram.
